Score Guide

What actually moves your credit score

Roughly how a typical credit score is weighted, and what to do about each factor.

Payment History ~35%
The single biggest factor. One 30-day late payment can hurt more than almost anything else you do right.
  • Turn on autopay for at least the minimum on every account, even ones you plan to pay off early.
  • If you're behind, get current before doing anything else — recent lates hurt more than old ones.
  • If you have one isolated late payment on an otherwise clean account, a goodwill letter (see generator above) genuinely works for some creditors.
Credit Utilization ~30%
How much of your available revolving credit you're using. This resets every month, so it's the fastest lever you have.
  • Keep total utilization under 30%; under 10% is where scores really benefit.
  • Pay down balances a few days before the statement closing date, not just the due date — the balance on your statement date is usually what gets reported.
  • Ask for a credit limit increase on an account in good standing (often a soft pull) to lower utilization without paying anything down.
  • Don't close old cards just to "clean up" — it removes available credit and can spike utilization.
Length of Credit History ~15%
  • Keep your oldest account open, even if you rarely use it — put one small recurring charge on it so the issuer doesn't close it for inactivity.
  • Being added as an authorized user on a family member's old, well-managed account can inherit some of that history.
Credit Mix ~10%
  • Having both revolving credit (cards) and installment loans (auto, student, personal) helps modestly.
  • Not worth opening a loan you don't need just for this — it's the smallest factor.
  • A secured credit card or credit-builder loan from a credit union is a low-risk way to add positive mix if you're starting from thin credit.
New Credit / Inquiries ~10%
  • Each hard inquiry typically costs a few points and matters for about a year.
  • Rate-shop for a single loan (auto, mortgage) within a short window — most scoring models treat those as one inquiry.
  • Avoid opening several new accounts back-to-back when you're trying to raise a score before a big application.

Build payment history

A small installment loan you pay into over time (reported to all 3 bureaus), then get the money back at the end — no hard credit check to apply. Pairs directly with the "credit mix" and "payment history" sections above.
